Grandma Lucys Date Squares

Features:
    Cuisine:

My Squares didn't turn out so well. The recipe did not specify pan size, but used an 8X8 baking pan (since it yields 8 servings) and the baking time was not nearly long enough. Even after 35 minutes the top didn't brown. Seems like there was not enough shortening (the pastry was so crumbly that most of it fell off). Also, faced with several sizes of packaged dates, I don't know if I should have used more or fewer dates (my package yeilded 1.5 cups). If I made them again, I would use a larger baking pan, and more shortening so that the pastry would hold together and not flake off. The flavor was good, and I liked the enthusiasm of the introduction which is why I selected this recipe to try over some others.
