I guess I'm in the minority here. I omitted the sugar all together based on other reviews. I don't care for sweet in my chili. I wasn't a fan of the ketchup. It made it taste like a sloppy joe. I first made it following the directions (minus the sugar and a little less chili powder) and it was meh. The ketchup still made it too sweet and it lacked flavor. I upped the cumin, added beef bouillon and more spices. Still wasn't enough to hide the ketchup taste. I think there is a reason why everyone tweaks this recipe then rates it five stars. I'd start with no sugar or ketchup and go from there, unless a BBQ sauce chili is what you're after. On another note, the spicy v8 wasn't that spicy. I was leary about it, but was pleasantly surprised. Guess I was just hoping for something else. But if you like a sweet/spicy blend this may be for you.

Kelly’s Chili, This is my very own recipe that I have won 3 chili cook-offs with! PERFECT for the Super Bowl coming up!!!!, I guess I’m in the minority here I omitted the sugar all together based on other reviews I don’t care for sweet in my chili I wasn’t a fan of the ketchup It made it taste like a sloppy joe I first made it following the directions (minus the sugar and a little less chili powder) and it was meh The ketchup still made it too sweet and it lacked flavor I upped the cumin, added beef bouillon and more spices Still wasn’t enough to hide the ketchup taste I think there is a reason why everyone tweaks this recipe then rates it five stars I’d start with no sugar or ketchup and go from there, unless a BBQ sauce chili is what you’re after On another note, the spicy v8 wasn’t that spicy I was leary about it, but was pleasantly surprised Guess I was just hoping for something else But if you like a sweet/spicy blend this may be for you , I omit the brown sugar as it’s really not needed but i always pair it with a slice a cornbread in each bowl and cover it in chili it really makes the chili that much better I would never do it without cornbread trust me on this!
