Baked Italian Sub Sandwiches

Features:
    Cuisine:

Terrific!! This was a spur of the moment decision, and all I had on-hand was Boar's Head roast beef, Swiss cheese and red onion. After reading other reviews, I sprinkled each sandwich with oregano, basil, black pepper and salt before baking. After they came out of the oven, I added the dressing. They were delicious and WAY better than anything from a fast food joint. My only technical difficulty was the cheese wasn't quite melted and they were still cold in the middle. I should have either upped the oven temp, left a little longer or maybe not wrapped quite so well. I took to heart the suggestions made by happy_baxter (which was a useful post) about laying them on a tray to bake. However, I made these ahead of time, so the foil worked great. Our local grocers do carry better quality Italian meats and cheeses. I will plan ahead better next time. That said, these were really good and I will make again. knightgoddess, thank you for the recipe!

That said, these were really good and I will make again. knightgoddess, thank you for the recipe!,A key to a great Italian sub is to first get delicious footlong+ buns. Then place them open face on a tray. Cover one half with genoa salami, capicola, mortadella(better italian bologna), then provolone. On top of the cheese I put a bit of pepperoni and then sliced onion. On the other half place the thinly sliced tomatoes. Season with Italian seasonings, salt and pepper and a touch of olive oil. Bake at 350 to 375F about 12-14 minutes. After removing from the oven add shredded lettuce and more oil and vinegar or an italian dressing of your choice. Delicious every time.
